Akong A Remarkable Life

This film tells the remarkable story of Akong Tulku Rinpoche, Tibetan Buddhist master, compelled to flee his homeland at the height of Sino-Tibetan tensions who survives exile and goes on to found Samye Ling in Eskdalemuir, the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the West. During the harrowing journey over the Himalayas Akong makes a promise that if he survives, he will devote his life to helping others and was one of only 13 of the 300 exiled Tibetans in his group to reach India. In 1967 he co-founded Samye Ling with his friend Trungpa Rinpoche and increasingly turned his mind to the suffering of people around the world. Akong’s fundamental message of compassion-in-action shines through his subsequent humanitarian activities in Europe, Tibet, Nepal, Zimbabwe and South Africa and his example inspires thousands to work to make the world a better place. Akong Rinpoche was murdered in China in October 2013 but despite this sad and shocking end to a remarkable life, the film ends on a message of hope.
